Contextual Fit
Smith House by Richard Meier
"The responsibility of an architect is to create a sense of order, a sense of place, a sense of relationship."
The Smith Family wants an architect to design an addition to their house on the shore of the Long Island Sound. The original house, now known world wide was designed in 1965 by famous architect Richard Meier. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have changed warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically requests that the integrity of Richard Meier's design be respected maintaining the same systems and patterns, while the new addition should have its own presence.

Narrative
The Smith families needs have changed since having another child they wish to construct a master suite seperate from the childrens bedrooms. Although, the Miller's wish to add more privacy to their lives, they don't want to be isolated from their family, thereby adding a large family room to spend time together. The Miller's realizing they're getting older have become more health concious and would like to construct an exercise room as well. The Miller's enjoy spending time outdoors and expressed the need for a place where the family could relax outside or have dinner with a view in the form of an formal outdoor deck. While speaking with the Miller's, they expressed an interest in lighthouses and the incredible views from the gallery decks they have seen through out their boat travels. They wished for an area to experience that from home, making a need for an Overlook deck to top off their home additions.
